The Greater Rochester area, comprised of Rochester, Rochester Hills (named for its rolling hills), and Oakland Township, is one of the most successful communities in the United States; it is truly the jewel of Oakland County,
It occupies the Northeast corner of Oakland County, Michigan and has over 73,000 residents with a 20% population growth from 2000-2010. This area is notorious for its captivating parks, trails, woodlands, prairies, marshes, and recreation that comprise some of the most scenic landscapes in all of southeast Michigan and it’s only a 30 minute drive to downtown Detroit. All of which makes it a compelling place to call home, “a perfect mix of historic and hip.”
This area was the first settlement in Oakland County by James Graham in 1817. These early settlers choose this area because it was laden with trees and had copious amounts of water sources to ensure their success.
This area has preserved several historic landmarks, some of which include: Meadow Brook Hall, a globally renowned castle built in the 1920s and national historic landmark, Van Hoosen Farm which now is home to The Rochester Hills Museum, containing permanent and temporary exhibits about the history of the community.
The area’s more recent heritage dates back to 1850. The Clinton River, Stony Creek, and Paint Creek are the area’s three main sources of water power, which afforded the creation of mills, used to make clothing, food, and materials for homes. Rochester Hills officially became a city in 1984
Stony Creek is one of the oldest subdivisions in this area and is comprised of some of the most historic and impressive houses in the area. Now there is a myriad of housing styles to choose from.
No matter what home you choose in this area, you’ll be close to downtown. Rochester is a thriving downtown shared by its neighboring communities and includes a classic Main Street with businesses designed to satisfy even the most diverse shopper and includes over 350 shops, salons, restaurants, and professional services to choose from.
Nationally Recognized Schools
This area is also know its superb schools, which includes nationally recognized private and public education of all levels. Rochester Hills is part of both the Rochester Community Schools District and the Avondale School District (shared with Auburn Hills and Troy). Rochester Community Schools has 13 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 4 high schools. It is also a home to Oakland University and is the only major research university in Oakland County.
