Shelby Charter Township, AKA Shelby Township, is a 35-square mile community located in Macomb County and is home to about 75,000 people. Some its neighbors include: Rochester, Washington, Macomb Township, and Utica. Historically, Shelby Township is one of Southeastern Michigan’s fastest-growing communities.

Shelby Township is a classic suburban community whose housing stock ranges from 3-bedroom, 1-bath homes built in the 1950s to 6-bedroom 5-bath mansions built in the last decade that sell for over $1 million. It is mainly a residential community with businesses sprinkled throughout that range from health facilities to retail, from auto parts manufacturers to schools.

Among all the municipalities in Macomb County that provide full-service police and fire service to its residents, Shelby Township is the second-lowest tax rate with a local millage rate of 9.299.

Shelby Township’s economic climate emulates that of the rest of the region. The Township’s well-manicured and spacious lots and yards make its residential neighborhoods some of the most sought-after in Macomb County and which also contributes to their place among the highest median home values in Macomb County.

Parks Parks and More Parks!

One of Shelby Township’s most prized possessions is their 1,200 acres of Township parks and 10 park facilities that are home to more than 100 species of native birds and animals, including nesting American bald eagles, and more than 80 types of trees, shrubs and wildflowers. “Greenways” provide opportunities to protect natural resources and wildlife habitat by offering interconnected green space all through a community.  Some of the parks include: River Bends Park, Ford Field Central Park and Whispering Woods Kiwanis Park and many of the parks are also equipped with sports fields, playscapes, picnics, disc golf, tennis courts, fishing sites, and pavilions for rent.  Shelby Township offers hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails and Macomb Orchard Trail, which a system of over 23 miles of non-motorized multi-use trails, which is perfect for the hiking & biking enthusiast. These trails give access to the Clinton River, which connects its residents to even more recreation prospects such as 180 miles of trail throughout southeast Michigan.  You will also fine the 4,000-acre Stony Creek Metropark that is 4,000 acres and is home to the 500-acre Stoney Creek Lake.  If hiking and biking isn’t your thing, you can check out our championship public golf course, Cherry Creek Golf Club, which is one of the premier golf and banquet centers in Michigan.  If you enjoy the outdoors, you will never run out of things to do in Shelby Township.

Education

One of The Top Districts in The Region

Shelby Township is part of Utica Community Schools District (USC), which is among the top districts in the region and a small portion of the Township is part of the Romeo School District. With almost 30,000 students attending one of 25 elementary schools, 7 junior high schools, and 4 high schools, Utica Community Schools is the second-largest school district in the state of Michigan. In 2014, 3 of the district’s teachers were among 150 national educators selected to participate in a program to develop a new generation of leaders within the teaching profession.

UCS students repeatedly outperform their county and state peers in achievement. Utica Academy for International Studies, which was recently named Michigan’s most challenging high school program by The Washington Post.
